Who we are
For 26 years and counting, Black Bear Builders has been making homeowner’s dreams come true. Stuart Cleaveland was captivated by the joy of building things. But unlike most, that fascination didn’t fade with age. What began with Legos and building blocks grew into a lifelong passion for craftsmanship. Driven by a love for working with his hands, Stuart pursued a degree in carpentry and gained valuable on-the-job experience in the trades. In 1999, he launched Black Bear Builders, bringing his vision for quality, integrity and hands-on expertise to life. He has held a MN Building License ever since and has expanded his skill to include licensing in both radon testing and mitigation.
At Black Bear Builders, we believe that true professionalism is born from the ability to work your craft with ease – always being a few steps ahead of the game, and knowing where to look for problems before they arise. By keeping a close eye on the project and maintaining a high level of dialogue with both the client and the remodeling team, we focus on both skillful craftmanship and customer satisfaction.

Black Bear Builders did an excellent job with our unfinished basement. Other contractors I contacted prior to Black Bear Builders would not reply or be willing to take on the job. We had several items that were out of code from the time the house was built; therefore, there was a lot of effort with wall demolition, new electrical, new insulation, HVAC, and framing adjustments. During their work, they noticed our crawl space had moisture, which then led to the discovery of rotted siding. Stuart was open and honest, took the time to explain everything, fixed any problems, and made everything look amazing. There was constant communication with scheduling and providing updates, they were respectful of our home, and always cleaned up any mess after a long day’s work. Stuart and Tyler are deeply knowledgeable and display their skills with the work they do. Our family could not be happier with everything they did. Installed large dog door w/dual flaps on side of house lower level. Installed new storm door. Stuart did an exceptional job. Very professional and came prepared! I will definitely be being contacting him again. He also built a 2ft x 2ft x 5" high riser for the outside wall for the dog door. This was so the inside/outside transition through the dog door would be level. This was at NO COST to me. - Nice Touch! If you want an honest, hardworking professional, you can't go wrong with Black Bear Builders.
Kitchen cabinet replacement and floor repair. Stuart worked with us to come up with great solutions to fix our water damaged kitchen. There were a few issues as there are in any project, but he resolved everything to make sure we were happy and kitchen looked great!
